Definition or The Meaning of Narrative Text

A Narrative text is a story with complications or problematic events and it tries to find the resolutions to solve the problems. An important part of narrative text is the narrative mode, the set of methods used to communicate the narrative through a process narration.

The Purpose of Narrative Text

The Purpose or Function of Narrative Text is:

  • to amuse or entertain the reader with a story.
  • to gain and hold a readers’ interest.
  • to teach or inform, to change attitudes / social opinions

Generic Structure of Narrative Text

  1. Orientation
  2. Complication
  3. Resolution
  4. Re-Orientation/Coda (optional)

Explanation about the Generic Structure of Narrative Text:

Orientation

Sets the scene: where and when the story happened and introduces the participants of the story: who and what is involved in the story.

Complication

Tells the beginning of the problems which leads to the crisis (climax) of the main participants. read more

        The purpose of publishing this video is giving appreciation to the students for their effort to increase their courage in improving their speaking skill and act performance. Our other goal in publishing this video is to support their other friends and all readers, especially everyone who are still studying in Junior High School, so they are not embarrassed in conveying their idea and their ability in action.

       Although the performance of the presentation is not as good as the real artists, however, the video of presentation below can be as an evidence that our students can improve and perform their skill in achievement of their ability in action to implement English Material, especially combination of speaking skill and act performance.       After discussing definition, generic structure and language feature of Narrative Text in previous post, now we want to continue discussing about Narrative Text. In this case we want to discuss about some Kinds Text of Narrative, they are:

1. Myth

      A traditional story accepted as history; serves to explain the world view of a people.  A story of great but unknown age which originally embodied a belief regarding some fact or phenomenon of experience, and in which often the forces of nature and of the soul are personified; an ancient legend of a god, a hero, the origin of a race, etc.; a wonder story of prehistoric origin; a popular fable which is, or has been, received as historical. 2. Legends

      Legends also stories that have been made, but they are different from the myth. myth reply questions about the workings of nature, and is set in a time long ago, before written history. Legend of the people and the actions or deeds. People are living in a more recent and is mentioned in history. Once upon a time, there was a king and his queen who lived in the Kingdom of Belinyu. They didn’t have any child. Until one night, the queen had a dream of a turtle. It said that the queen would have a baby, and she had to give a Komala necklace to the baby. The queen woke up and she was holding a Komala necklace in her hand. She told her dream to the King, and he was very happy.

Shortly, the queen’s dream became reality, she delivered a beautiful baby girl. The king named her, Komala. She grew up as a pretty girl, however, she had bad attitude because her parents always spoiled her too much.

One day, Komala heard her parents were talking about the turtle in her mother’s dream. She thought that the turtle was very interesting anima, so she wanted it as her pet. She insisted to find it, and the king allowed her to look for the animal.

Accompanied with the king’s guards, Komala searched the turtle, and finally,. She found it in the beach. She shouted to it, “Penyu busuk wait for me”, in several time, but the turtle kept swimming. Komala ran after it into the sea, she tried to catch it. Until then she finally drowned and disappeared, and all of the guards could not save her. Now, people call the beach, Penyusuk.

       A man in Puerto Rico had a wonderful parrot. There was no another parrot like it.

       It was very, very smart. This parrot would say any word-except one. He would not say the name of the town where he was born. The name of the town was Catano.

       The man tried to teach the parrot to say Catano. But the bird would not say the word. At first the man was very nice, but then he got angry. “You are a stupid bird! Why can’t you say the word? Generic Structure of Narrative Text

       As we know there are many kinds of text so in this occasion I want to share about Narrative Text. In this case I want to share about the function, generic structure and example of Narrative Text. The explanation is below. (Also read : Definition of Recount Text)

<>  Function :

Narrative text is an imaginative story to entertain people (imaginative narrative text is a story that aims to entertain people).

If you look at the English dictionary, literally meaningful of narrative :

  1. a spoken or written account of connected events of a story.
  2. the narrated part of a literary work, as distinct from dialogue.
  3. the practice or art of narration. 

So it can be concluded that a narrative text is a text which contains a story either written or unwritten, and there is a series of connected events. and the social function is to entertain or amuse the reader or listener. (Also read other article at : Pengertian Ciri dan Contoh Peribahasa)

<> Generic Structure of Narrative Text :

  • Orientation: It is about the opening paragraph where the characters of the story are introduced
  • Complication: Where the problems in the story developed.
  • Resolution: Where the problems in the story is solved.

Sometimes the arrangement (generic structure) of narrative text can contain: Orientation, Complication, Evaluation, Resolution and Reorientation. Although the “Evaluation” and”Reorientation” is optional; may be added, and could not. Evaluation provides assessment /evaluation of the course of the story or conflict.
