       The Legend of Banyuwangi. Hi my beloved visitor! Have you ever gone to Banyuwangi ? It is located at the eastern-most end of the Indonesian island of Java and it is a very strategic area for those who want to go to Bali, as it serves as an important ferry port between Java and Bali. It is surrounded by mountains and forests to the west; by sea to the east and south. Banyuwangi is only separated by Strait of Bali from Bali. The name of Banyuwangi is Javanese for “fragrance water”, connected to the Javanese folklore of Sri Tanjung.

       How is the story of Banyuwangi or “fragrance water” can be read from the following story.

       A long time ago, the island of java was ruled by a king. The King had a Loyal Prime Minister whose name was Sidapaksa. He had a beautiful wife. Her name was Sri Tanjung. He loved her very much although she was from a village. However, his mother did not like her. Sidapaksa’s mother did not agree with his son’s lover. Apparently, his mother hated her because Sri Tanjung was not an aristocrat. It is a very important status in her society. But Sidapaksa did not care about his future wife status and married her.      Long time ago in West Java, There was a kingdom named Padjajaran Kingdom, the kingdom was ruled by Prabu Munding Wangi. He had a beautiful daughter named Dewi Lara Kaditha. She was very beautiful girl and friendly, all of the people in the kingdom were really like her, especially the king. However, although he had a beautiful daughter he was still unhappy because he expected to have a son. The King then decided to merry Dewi Mutiara, and he had a son from her. He was very happy. His son’s name was Dammar.

Story of Javanese Letters 

      One day when Ajisaka and Dora worked in the rice field, they talked to villagers about the village.

       “It is really a nice village. I liked to live here. The scenery is very interesting, the air is very fresh and, the villagers are so friendly,” Ajisaka said to one of the villagers.  

       “Yes, it is. But, the villagers always feel afraid and worried about the condition of this village. The people are not in peace anymore,” replied the villagers. (Also read : The Legend of Sarangan Lake)

       “Why do they feel afraid?” asked Ajisaka. 

       “Well, the King of Medhang is very cruel,” answered Nyai Sengkeran.

       “Really, what is his name? And what he had done to the villagers so they are so afraid?” asked Ajisaka. 

       “He is King Dewata Cengkar. He always asks for the villager to be his meal. It is very scary. We are always worried to wait when it is our turn to be his meal,” said the villager sadly.  read more
