       What is an auxiliary verb? An auxiliary verb (also called helping verb) is an auxiliary used to help/assist the main verb of the sentience.

       After having understand the meaning of an auxiliary, let’s we discuss about Auxiliary TO HAVE. The topic I’ll share is the function of TO HAVE, the kind and the examples in using TO HAVE.

A. The function of TO HAVE

There two main functions of TO HAVE. They are:

1. As Auxiliary

      Before studying about the function and its examples, it is better we study the pattern or the form of sentence using Modal WOULD. As other auxiliary modals, the pattern of Modal WOULD is able to be shown as below:

( + )  Subject + Would + infinitive (verb 1) + Complement

Example :

  • We would play football.
  • They would study together.
  • Jack would go to Makkah.

( – )  Subject + Would + not + infinitive (verb 1) + Complement

Example :

  • We would not play football.
  • They would not study together.
  • Jack would not go to Makkah.

NOTE :

  • She would not come here = She wouldn’t come here.
  • Bambang would not attend the meeting = Bambang wouldn’t attend the meeting.

      Before studying about the function and its examples, it is better we study the pattern or the form of sentence using Modal SHALL. As other auxiliary modals, the pattern of Modal MUST is able to be shown as below:

( + )  Subject + Shall + infinitive (verb 1) + Complement

Example :

  • We shall finish our work on time.
  • We shall invite them on our wedding party.
  • I shall meet him on Monday.
  • I shall borrow some books from the library.

NOTE : SHALL can be shortened to ‘LL

Example :

  • We shall buy a new motorcycle. = We’ll buy a new motorcycle.
  • I shall go abroad. = I’ll go abroad.

( – )  Subject + Shall + not + infinitive (verb 1) + Complement

Example :

  • We shall not finish our work on time.
  • We shall not invite them on our wedding party.
  • I shall not meet him on Monday.
  • I shall not borrow some books from the library.

NOTE : SHALL NOT can be changed to SHAN’T

Example :

  • We shall not buy a new motorcycle. = We shan’t buy a new motorcycle.

1.  To show possibility (it is slightly stronger than “might”)

Example :

  • What he said may be true.

2.  To request or give permission (this is a formal use, “can” is the informal version)

Example :

  • You may sit down.
  • May I speak?
  • He may not use the car.
