This site of Indonesian ancient human is located in Sud-Village of Sokoliman, Bejiharjo village, Karangmojo, Gunung Kidul regency, province of Yogyakarta. It is about 12 kilometers from Wonosari. It is very easy to get there because the road to go to Sokoliman site is accessible as the road has been made of hot mix – asphalt road. If we take a bus to go to this site, we can take the bus from Giwangan bus station, that heading to Wonosari, stop in Wonosari bus station, then change the bus heading to Bejiharjo village. Then we have to take the motorcycle taxi that will take us to Sokoliman site. For saving more time, it is better if we take our own private vehicle because we can pass through few shortcuts. When we visit Sokoliman Megalith Site, we can find its site is in form of rounded, oval, or cubical, stones piles, and wide stone board. They are placed in a garden. Each of the stones has been marked to identify, and they are all placed in the right side of the entrance.
Some archaeologists were interested to study more about the existence of these sites since the Dutch colonial period. This study was started by a Dutch archaeologist, named J.L. Moens who studied the research in 1934. The next year, it was continued by Van Der Hoop, and the last one was done by Yogyakarta Archaeology Institute and Department of Archaeology, Faculty of Literature and Culture of Gadjah Mada University. In the research, they did not only find megalithic stones, but also finding several discoveries, such as skeletons in the depth of 80 centimeters that holding some instruments made from iron, like sickle, and a broken iron sword in the left hand. Another discovery is a grave stone coffin which contained of 3 bodies horizontally stacked and their heads on the north side. On the chest of the top skeleton, it was found copper ring, iron knives, and few beads scattered inside the coffin. Besides, there are found bronze ring, terracotta bowls, and potteries. You can see the replica of its stone coffin in Museum Sonobudoyo, Yogyakarta.
Around the sites, there were also found limestone statues, such as Gampingan temple. Seen from the motif, this statue originally comes from Siwa Budha period. Around this statue location, people often do the ritual of cleaning the village or cleaning the river. We can give the people here two thumbs up for their awareness in maintaining this site. They are proud of the site in their village.
