Recreation to Ratu Boko Temple. Hello my beloved friends! How are we? Hopefully we always is blessed by Allah. Well in this occasion I want to share about one place for other destination in having recreation. It is Ratu Boko Temple. This place is located in Yogyakarta. It is precisely located in the sub-district of Prambanan district of Klaten. It is Approximately 2 km southern of Prambanan Temple. Although this place is in area of Klaten, however, it is nearer to Yogyakarta for it is just about 19 kilometers from the city of Yogyakarta.
Ratu Boko Temple is a magnificent building that it was built during the reign of Panangkaran, one of the descendants of the Sailendra dynasty. The Temple was originally named Abhayagiri Vihara (this meaning is monastery in a peaceful hill) was built for seclusion and focus on the spiritual life. Being in this Temple, we can feel peace while seeing the wonderful scenery of Yogyakarta, Prambanan temple and the background of Mount Merapi because this place is located on the hills.
The temple of Ratu Boko is located at 196 meters above sea level. The temple area of 250,000 m2 is divided into four sections, namely center, west, southeast, and east. The middle section consists of the main gate of the building, grounds, combustion temple, pond, square terrace and “Paseban”. Meanwhile, the southeast part includes Halls, 3 temples, complex ponds for princess. Complex caves, Buddhist Stupa, and there is also a pond in the east. While the western part only consists hills.
If we enter from the gate of the Temple, we will go directly to the middle. Two high gates will welcome us. The first gate has three entrances while the second has 5 doors. If we are careful, in the first gate will be found the word ‘Panabwara’. There is said that, based on inscriptions Central Wanua III, written by Rakai Panabwara, (descendant of Panangkaran) that took over the Temple. The purpose of writing his name was to legitimize the power, gave “power” to be more glorious and to gave sign that the building was the main building.
About 45 meters from the second gate, we will see a temple made of white stones so it is called temple of Batu Putih. Not far from there, we will find Combustion Temple. The temple is a square (it is 26 meters x 26 meters) and it has 2 terraces. As the name implies, the temple was used for cremation. Besides the two temples, the sacred terrace and a pool will be found later when we walk approximately 10 meters from the Combustion Temple.
A mysterious well is encountered when we walk to the southeast of the temple burning. There is said, the well was named Amrita Mantana that means sacred water treated with charms. Now, the water is still often used. Local people said, well water can bring good luck to the wearer. While Hindus use it for Tawur grand ceremony the day before Nyepi. Water is used in the ceremony is believed to support the objective, namely to purify themselves and to return the earth and its contents at the beginning harmony.
Stepping into the eastern part of the Temple, we will see two caves, big pond measuring 20 meters x 50 meters and Buddha effigy that sits quietly. Two caves were formed from sedimentary rock called pumice Breccia. The cave, which is more popular named cave Lanang while under of cave Lanang it is called Cave Wadon. Exactly in front of Cave Lanang there is a pool and three stupas. According to a research, it is known that it is Aksobya stupa, a Buddhist Pantheon.
Although founded by a Buddhist, it has elements of Hindu. It can be seen with the Linga and Yoni, Ganesha statues, and gold plate that reads “Om Rudra Ya Namah Swaha” as a form of worship to the god Rudra is another name of Lord Shiva. The existence of Hindu elements that prove the existence of religious tolerance that is reflected in architectural works. Indeed, when it Panangkaran who are Buddhists live side by side with the followers of Hinduism.
And the last part in the west we will find hills. There we can enjoy interesting scenery around the hills. Being in this place, we can feel peace while enjoying the wonderful scenery of Yogyakarta, the exotics of Prambanan temple and the beauty of background of Mount Merapi.
So, have a nice trip to Ratu boko Temple
