Function of Auxiliary or Verb TO DO

        After sharing about the function of Auxiliary TO BE in the previous post, now we want to share another kind of auxiliaries. In this case we want to share about Auxiliary TO DO. However, before discussing about auxiliary TO DO, it would be better if we recall our understanding about the meaning of Auxiliary verb. (Also read : Function and Pattern of Auxiliary Modal WOULD)

       What is an auxiliary verb? An auxiliary verb (also called helping verb) is an auxiliary used to help/assist the main verb of the sentience.

       After having understand the meaning of an auxiliary, let’s we discuss about Auxiliary TO DO. The topic I’ll share is the function of TO DO, the kind and the examples in using TO DO.

A. The function of TO DO

There two main functions of TO DO. They are:

1. As Auxiliary

TO DO is function as auxiliary when there is a main verb (verb) after TO DO in a sentence. In this case, the sentence consists of auxiliary TO DO is called SIMPLE TENSE.

Examples:

  • Do you study English? (simple Present Tense)
  • Did she come here? (Simple Past Tense)
  • You don’t study English. (Simple Present Tense)
  • She didn’t come here. (Simple Past Tense)

As auxiliary, TO DO can be Used in negative and interrogative sentences.

  • TO DO Used in Negative sentences

S + TO DO + not + Verb1 (the sentence is in Simple Tense). And the form is

S + do/does/did + not + Verb1

Example

  • I do not know the truth.
  • She doesn’t agree with me.
  • They didn’t arrive here yet.

  • TO DO Used in Interrogative sentences

TO DO + S + Verb1 + ? (the sentence is in Simple Tense). And the form is

Do/Does/Did + S + Verb1 + ?

Example

  • Do you know him?
  • Does she agree with me?
  • Did they arrive here?

2. As Main Verb

TO DO is function as Main Verb or Full Verb (commonly called Verb) when there is no main verb (verb) after TO DO in a sentence. In this case TO DO is directly followed by Complement (object, adverb or Noun.

Example

  • He did homework. (homework = object)
  • She does at home. (at home = adverb)
  • We do together.

Note:

As main verb, TO DO can be accompanied by another auxiliary.

Example:

  • Rahmad can do the test easily. (can = auxiliary)
  • We are doing exercises. (are = auxiliary)
  • She didn’t do the test. (did = auxiliary)

B. Kinds of TO DO

There are five kinds of TO DO, they are:

Examples

  • She wants to do her work herself.
  • I do it in my room.
  • She does her act.
  • We did in turn.
  • They have done our task on time.
