Function and Pattern of Auxiliary Modal CAN
There some Auxiliary Modals in English we have to know when we study about sentence. However, in this occasion we will only study Modal “CAN”. Before studying about the function and its examples, it is better we study the pattern or the form of sentence using Modal CAN. As other auxiliary modals, the pattern of Modal CAN is able be shown as below:
( + ) Subject + can + infinitive (verb 1) + Complement
She can sing a song.
They can stay here.
( – ) Subject + can + not + infinitive (verb 1) + Complement
She cannot sing a song.
They cannot stay here.
( ? ) Can + Subject + infinitive (verb 1) + Complement
Can she sing a song?
Can they stay here?

The Function of Modal CAN
There are some functions of Modal “CAN” that is able to be studied, they are:
1. To talk about what someone is able to do
He is so strong. He can lift that car.
I can read 10 pages of story book in three minutes.
She can’t come before four o’clock.
I can’t speak French.
2. To talk about possibility
Andrew can be a doctor.
Rosita can be a nurse.
He can be a mechanic.
We can be good players.
3. To talk about a general possibility
The weather here can get really bad.
The fire can burn the houses.
Such things can happen.
4. To say that something is allowed
He can borrow my book if he needs it.
You can smoke here.
You can pay with a credit card.”
You can come to my house every time.
5. To make a request (an informal use), for formal request, use ”MAY”
Can you help me with my homework?
Can you make some tea?
Can you come here, please?
Can I sit here?
