Definition of Procedure Text

Procedure Text is a kind of text which shows on how to make something completely.


A Text that explains how something works or how to use instruction/operation manuals, e.g. how to use the video, the computer, the tape recorder, the photocopier, the fax.


A Text that instructs how to do a particular activity, e.g. recipes, rules for games, science experiments, road safety rules.


A Text that deals with human behaviour, eg how to live happily, how to succeed.

The purpose or Social Function of Procedure Text

  • To explain/tell (the reader) how to make/operate/do something through a sequence of actions or steps…
  • To explain steps/instructions to make/operate/do something.

Generic Structure of Procedure Text

Procedure text has three structures including :

  1. Goal or Purpose: contains the purpose of making the procedure text or the final result to be achieved (can be in the form of a title)
  2. Materials: contains information about the tools or materials needed, but not all procedure texts contain this section (commonly found in recipes).

Language Features of Procedure Text

  • Using imperative sentence patters (Command), for example, Cut, Do not mix, and so on.
  • Using active verbs, such as turn, put, do, mix, etc.
  • Using connectives (Conjunction) to sort of activities, such as then, while, etc.
  • Using adverbials (Adverbs) to express detail the time, place, manner accurate, for example, for five minutes, 2 hours, etc.
  • Using the simple present tense.

Example 1

How to make a sandwich (purpose/aim/goal)

You need (materials)

  • 2 slices of bread
  • peanut butter
  • a banana
  • honey

What you should do are : (steps)

  • Take two slices of bread
  • Spread peanut butter
  • Cut up a banana onto small slices and put them on one of the slices
  • Pour some honey over the bananas
  • Put the other slice of bread on top

Example 2

How to Make Ice Cream


2 cups milk or cream

2 tablespoons sugar

1 teaspoon Vanilla extract

Several cups of Ice

1 cup of salt

You need these supplies to make ice cream

Tub or large coffee can hold salt and ice

Glass bowl or small coffee can

Electric mixer or whisk

Ice cream scoop

Storage container for freezer


First, setting up the cooling apparatus. Stir ice and salt in the larger container.

Then, combine the ingredients. Mix together the milk, sugar, and vanilla in the glass bowl. Then, set this bowl in the tub filled with ice and rock salt, making sure that the saltwater does not spill into the bowl.

Next, mix the ice cream. Mix the ingredients in the small container vigorously. The salty ice mixture will cool the mixture down until it turns into ice cream. It should take about 10 to 15 minutes to stir the ice cream using either method. Stir until it is free from ice crystals and is the right consistency.

Finally, storage and serve. ice cream is ready.
