There are three parts of discussion Text, they are:

      This part consists of an introductory paragraph that introduces topic/issue – may state writer’s view.

2.   Argument

       This part consists of series of paragraphs that outline arguments for and against the issue or topic. Words should show comparison/contrast and link arguments.

3.   Conclusion

       The entire family was full of anticipation and excitement with their new life in America. However few days before their departure, the youngest son was bitten by a dog. The doctor sewed up the boy. Because of the possibility of getting rabies, there were being quarantined for long days. There were in quarantine when the departure time came. The family dreams were dashed. They could not make the trip to America as they had planned. The father was full of disappointed and anger. Definition of Procedure

       Procedure is kind of text which shows on how to make something completely. Procedure text is dominantly structured with imperative sentence since it actually an instruction. Procedure text usually explain the ingredient or material which is need, though sometime it is omitted, after that procedure text will explain step by step how to make the thing.

Purpose of a Procedure Text :

       To describe how something is accomplished through a sequence of action or steps. The communicative purpose is to tell the steps of making or doing something.

Generic Structure of Procedure

  1. 1. Goal: showing the purpose
  2. Material: Telling the needed materials. (It can be optional)
  3. Step 1 up to finish. Describing the steps to achieve the purpose

Function :

       Report text is a text which present information about something, as it is. It is as a result of systematic observation and analyses.

   Its social purpose is presenting information about something. They generally describe an entire class of things, whether natural or made: mammals, the planets, rocks, plants, countries of region, culture, transportation, and so on.


Generic Structure of Report Text :

  1. General Classification: General statements that describe the subject of the report, description, and classification.
  2. Description: tells what the phenomenon under discussion ; in terms of parts, qualities, habits or behaviors.


Language features of Report text :

  • Nouns and noun phrases are used rather than personal pronouns. The use of personal pronouns is limited.
  • Most reports are written in the present tense.
  • Some reports use technical or scientific terms.
  • Linking verbs are used, eg. is, are, has, have, belong to, to give coherence.
  • Uses some action verbs (climb, eat).
  • Descriptive language is used that is factual rather than imaginative eg. color, shape, size, body parts, habits, behaviors, functions, uses.

<>  Function :

Narrative text is an imaginative story to entertain people (imaginative narrative text is a story that aims to entertain people).

If you look at the English dictionary, literally meaningful of narrative :

  1. a spoken or written account of connected events of a story.
  2. the narrated part of a literary work, as distinct from dialogue.
  3. the practice or art of narration. 

So it can be concluded that a narrative text is a text which contains a story either written or unwritten, and there is a series of connected events. and the social function is to entertain or amuse the reader or listener.

<> Generic Structure of Narrative Text :

  • Orientation: It is about the opening paragraph where the characters of the story are introduced
  • Complication: Where the problems in the story developed.
  • Resolution: Where the problems in the story is solved.

Sometimes the arrangement (generic structure) of narrative text can contain: Orientation, Complication, Evaluation, Resolution and Reorientation. Although the “Evaluation” and”Reorientation” is optional; may be added, and could not. Evaluation provides assessment /evaluation of the course of the story or conflict. Descriptive text is a text which says what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing.

       So, we can say that the descriptive text is the text that describes what kind of person or an object described, good shape, properties, number and others in particular. Generic Structure of Descriptive Text :

  1. Identification: contains the identification of matter / a will be described.
  2. Description: contains the explanation / description of the thing / person to mention a few properties.

Language features of Descriptive text :

  • Specific participant has a certain object, is not common and unique (only one). for example: Bandengan beach, my house, Borobudur temple, uncle Jim
  • The use of the adjective (an adjective) to clarify the noun (noun) for example, be used for the following expression: a beautiful beach, a handsome man, the famous place in Jepara, etc..

  • Action verbs, there are verbs that show an activity (activity can be seen), for example: run, sleep, walk, cut etc.

       My Sphinx cat is the only pet I have. He has a little hair but is not totally hairless as he has a peach fuzz over much of his body. His coat is often a warm chamois. My Sphinx has a normal cat proportion.

  1. Definition of Recount Text

      A recount text is a text which tells about something that happened in the past. The details in a recount can include what happened, who was involved, where it took place, when it happened and why it occurred. Its purpose or goal is to entertain or inform about the past activity to the reader or listener.

        Recount text can be factual information, such as a news story or procedural information, such as telling someone how you built something or personal information, such as a family holiday or your opinion on a subject.


2. Generic Structure of Recount Text:

  • Orientation  : It is about introduction the participants, place and time. It tells who was involved, what happened, where the events took place, and when it happened.

  • Reorientation : It is optional. It consists of closure of events/ending. It is stating personal comment of the writer to the story

  1. Introducing personal participant; I, we, my group, etc.
  2. Using chronological connection; then, first, after that, etc.
