The Legend of Twin Masks Dance. Once upon a time there was a kingdom in East Java. The kingdom name was Bintolo. The king of Bintolo had a very beautiful princess. Because of her beauty, many princes, boys and young men fell in love with her and proposed her to be their wife. However, the princess always refused the wedding proposal politely. She always said that she did not want to get married yet.
Far away from the kingdom, there was a boy in the small village who lived with his mother. His father had died when he was still a child. The boy’s job was a mask maker. He also knew the princess’ beauty and he fell in love with her but he did not have any courage to propose her. The boy was ugly.
“How can I propose her? The princess even refused the proposal from the princes and also handsome and rich boys or men,” that’s what this ugly boy always thought.
However, the mask maker could not stop thinking about the princess. He always thought about her. Days and nights he always thought the beautiful princess. He did not want to eat and he could not sleep either. Soon, the boy was ill. And that made his mother was very sad. She was really worried about him because she loved her son very much.
“What’s a matter with you my son? Is there something wrong? Please tell me what in your mind is.” The mask maker’s mother asked him.
“I am sorry for making you being sad, Mom. I am falling in love the princess. But I’m not confident enough to express my feelings to her. I’m just a villager and ugly. I’m sure the princess doesn’t want to marry me. What should I do Mom.” Said the boy.
The mother replied. “You are a great mask maker. Try to make a mask of a handsome face and wear it when you come to the palace and propose the advice the boy’s mother.
The boy thought it was a great idea. He immediately made the most handsome and the best mask ever he had made. And when the mask was finished, he wore it. Amazingly the mask really looked like a real face and he looked very handsome. So he went to the palace confidently.
When he arrived to the kingdom palace, he directly met the King.
“Your majesty, I’m here to propose your daughter,” said the boy to the king.
“Stay here. I will talk to my daughter,” said the king.
The king then told his daughter that there was a very handsome boy who wanted to propose her.
“It’s all up to you, Dear. If you love him, you can marry him,” said the king.
And when the princess met the boy, she directly fell in love with him at the first sight. She thought that he was the most handsome boy in the world. Later the princess told the king that she accepted the boy’s wedding proposal.
At first the mask maker was very happy. His dream finally came true; he could marry the girl of his dream. However, he realized that the princess did not fall in love with him when she knew who was actually the boy. He realized that she fell in love with his mask. He then planned to tell the truth to the princess and the king. The mask maker was going to be ready with all the risks.
When the mask maker met to the princess and the king, he told the truth about the mask. But it was not as he thought, the princess was not angry to him.
“It is true I love you at the first time we met because of your face, because you are so handsome. But after I know you so well, I love you the way you are. Now, I want you to make another mask for me, the same mask you are wearing. I want to wear it in our wedding,” said the princess.
During the wedding, all the guests were very surprised to see the couple, the bride and the groom were wearing the same masks.
And that happen inspired some people to create a dance and named it “Joged Topeng Kembar” or Twin Masks Dance. Until now people still do the dance in Lumajang, East Java.
