Recreation to Suramadu Bridge. Suramadu (the abbreviation of Surabaya – Madura) is a bridge across the Madura Strait connecting Java and Madura Island. This bridge can be an alternative as recreation destination for tourists. With its total length reaching 5,438 meters, Suramadu Bridge becomes the pride of transportation infrastructure in Indonesia as it is the first and longest bridge to connect two islands and definitely is the next modern landmark of Indonesia after Monas in Jakarta.
The construction was done separately at three different sides. In both Bangkalan (exactly in Kamal) and Surabaya (exactly in Kenjeran) the causeways were built to connect the local road to the bridge, while in the middle the main bridge and the approach bridge were also built.
The bridge was built by a consortium of Indonesian companies PT Adhi Karya and PT Waskita Karya working with China Road and Bridge Corp. and China Harbor Engineering Co. Ltd. The total cost of the project, including connecting roads, has been estimated at 4.5 trillion rupiah (US$445 million).
Construction began in August 2003. In July 2004, a girder collapsed, killing one worker and injuring nine others. Work on the bridge halted at the end of 2004 due to lack of funds, but was restarted in November 2005. The main span of the bridge was connected on 31 March 2009, and the bridge was opened to the public on 10 June 2009.
The beginning construction of this bridge was inaugurated by the President Megawati Sukarnoputri on August 20, 2003 and its opening for using was inaugurated by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on June 10, 2009. The bridge construction is intended to accelerate development on the island of Madura, including infrastructure and economic field in Madura, which is relatively backward compared to other areas in East Java.
The main bridge using a cable stayed construction supported by the twin towers for about 140 meters. And the main bridge deck is using composite floor construction 2.4 meters thick. To accommodate the cruise ships crossing the Madura Strait, this bridge are provides free space for about 35 meters above sea level. This part was caused the restoration becomes more difficult and hampered and pend more cost for it.
Beside of giving advantages economic progress in east java, Suramadu Bridge is also become the tourism icon of Indonesia especially Surabaya and Madura (East Java). Almost thousands people from around Indonesia come to this place to look at the beautiful view of Madura Island from the top of the bridge. The top is there on middle of the bridge. It is almost 35 meters from the sea level and it also used to accommodate cruise ships that cross the Strait of Madura.
