       Mystery of Gajah Mada. Gajah Mada was the name of Mahapatih (Prime Minister) of Majapahit. He was not only very famous in Java Island, but also around Indonesia. Almost all Indonesian people know the big names Mahapatih Gajah Mada but there is no one know who Gajah Mada is. No one knows the name of this character. Until now, after eight centuries since the big names fly around the country, there is no one person who can unravel the mystery of its origin and even on the end of his life. Not only about the origin and death, about the political strategy toward the top in the Majapahit and its war strategy dominated the archipelago are also still holds many mysteries unanswered until now.

      There is no single source that can be used as a reference to determine the origin of Gajah Mada and who his parents were. Historians have many opinions about his origins. Ones mention Gajah Mada was from Sumatra, Minangkabau. They assume that “Mada” in Minangkabau means stubborn, while in Java, there is no word in the vocabulary of the language “Mada”. Whereas “Gajah” (means Elephant) is taken from the origin of the name of an animal in the andalas Island. This assumption is reinforced by the closeness of the relationship between Gajah Mada and Adityawarman (founder of the kingdom of Pagaruyung), was a prince of Majapahit Sumatra’s bloody, which brought the possibility of Adityawarman to Gajah Mada of Majapahit. But others called Gajah Mada come from Bali. Balinese people believe that hereditary story mentions that the duke’s mother came from Bali. Some say it was derived from Gajah Mada Krio Dayak tribe in Kalimantan Barat, referring to the story of the ancestors of the Krio ethnic Dayak named a Commander of the Watch Commander who was sent to Java Mada Dwipa to dominate the land of Java.        Outstanding mystery is not known exactly how such Gajah Mada to date. So most likely it’s just a way Moh.Yamin which embody his invention as Gajah Mada.

      We know the story of the beginning of his career before the position of Mahapatih was began as a guard of the Majapahit King. It was narrated that Gajah Mada was just a guard during the reign of King Jayanegara. Then there was the rebellion of the leader Dharmaputra by Ra Kuti who managed to control the kingdom. Gajah Mada was able to save the King of the rebels. Even then Gajah Mada regained the kingdom, killing Ra Kuti and restore the throne to hand of Jayanegara. It is also a mystery, how the guard was capable of beating back the rebels were so strong that it could take control of the kingdom. After successfully hand back Jayanegara as King, Gajah Mada was then appointed as governor by queen Dyah in Daha Gitarja (Jayanegara half-sister).

      The death of Jayanegara who killed by Ra Tanca is also a mystery about Gajah Mada. With the death of Jayanegara, Dyah Gitarja then was risen to be the Queen in titled Tribhuana Tunggadewi. This risen of Dyah Gitarja became a rumor that the murder of Jayanegara had been planned by Gajah Mada was previously using Ra Tanca hand. It gave advantage for Gajah Mada to be closer to Dyah Gitarja, and the death of Jayanegara made benefit to Gitarja. In addition, when Ra Tanca had killed Jayanegara, he was immediately assassinated by Gajah Mada without face to face trial. After Gitarja became a queen, then the position of Mahapatih was given to Gajah Mada.

      The reign of Hayam Wuruk was a golden periods of Majapahit under the reign of Mahapatih Gajah Mada. The position as Mahapatih was the highest position for Gajah Mada after the King. It was automatically very wide powers given by the king to him. When Majapahit mastered by Hayam Wuruk and Gajah Mada, the archipelago spread from the Malay Peninsula, Tumasik (Singapore), Swarnadwipa, Sambas, Brunei, Bali, Lombok to Siam. To master this maritime countries, Gajah Mada built an unusual strong war fleet under the leadership of Admiral Nala. But until recently we don’t know details how oversized fleet and how the war strategy was gotten by Mahapatih Gajag Mada. It is different as the war strategy done by Sun Tzu which was very famous.

       Gajah Mada stood among the greatest of Indonesia’s heroes. From the time when he swore his famous oath of allegiance, the Sumpah Palapa, until his death in 1364, a period of just 28 years, he succeeded in spreading the power and influence of Majapahit throughout the archipelago, and even beyond the boundaries of the present day Republic of Indonesia.

      The end life of Gajah Mada is also not clear. Gajah Mada was not known to have had wives and offspring. It is Also unknown how he died, where buried and where he spent the rest of his life after being retired as Mahapatih. None of the temples were clarify to commemorate him. Despite many predictions and forecasts about the tomb of Gajah Mada, petilasan and so forth, but this has not been proven scientifically. This figures to be one of the great mysteries of this nation.
