Function and Pattern of Auxiliary Modal MAY

      There some Auxiliary Modals in English we have to know when we study about sentence. However, in this occasion we will only study Modal “MAY”. In this case we will study Function and Pattern of Auxiliary Modal MAY so that we will be familiar to this auxiliary. (also study : Function and Pattern of Auxiliary Modal WILL)

      Before studying about the function and its examples, it is better we study the pattern or the form of sentence using Modal MAY. As other auxiliary modals, the pattern of Modal MAY is able to be shown as below:

Pattern of Modal MAY

( + )  Subject + May + infinitive (verb 1) + Complement

Example :

  • We may play football.
  • They may study together.
  • Jack may go to Makkah.

 ( – )  Subject + May + not + infinitive (verb 1) + Complement

Example :

  • We may not play football.
  • They may not study together.
  • Jack may not go to Makkah.

( ? ) May + Subject + infinitive (verb 1) + Complement

Example :

  • May we play football?
  • May they study together?
  • May Jack go to Makkah?

The Function of Modal MAY

There are some functions of Auxiliary Modal “MAY” that is able to be studied, they are:

1.  To show possibility (it is slightly stronger than “might”)

Example :

  • What he said may be true.
  • It may rain.
  • You may win the race.
  • I may go to the bank after this meeting.

2.  To request or give permission (this is a formal use, “can” is the informal version)

Example :

  • You may sit down.
  • May I speak?
  • He may not use the car.
  • May I go to the office?
