Difference Between Many and Much. Sometimes we feel confused to differ between the word “many” and “much”, so to know the difference these words, in this occasion I want to share about difference between many and much.
However, before we discuss about the difference between “many” and “much”, let’s we discuss about the similarity both of them.
The similarity between “many” and “much”
- “Many” and “much” are both used to indicate a large quantity.
I have much money. (It means that I have a lot of money)
She drinks much water. (It means that she drinks a lot of water)
They buy many books. (It means they buy a lot of books)
You bring many mangoes. (It means that you bring a lot of mangoes)
How many sisters do you have?
How much milk do you take?
- Both are use with “of” to indicate a portion of something.
Much of the beverage is fresh.
Many of my friends are teachers.
- Both are used with “so” to emphasize quantity.
So much chicken is left over from last night.
So many chips are bad for you.
The word “Much” is mainly used with uncountable nouns. And as we know that Uncountable nouns are also nearly always singular, e.g. water, salt, cake, research, etc. It means that uncountable nouns cannot be formed as plural.
They take much sugar. (Sugar is uncountable noun so it is in singular noun form)
Dadang buys much oil. (Sugar is uncountable noun so it is in singular noun form)
The word “many” is used with a plural noun. “Many” is mainly used with countable nouns, such as person, apple, spoon, day, etc. An easy way to tell apart countable nouns is that these nouns usually have plurals, such as people, apples, spoons, days, etc.
There are many empty chairs in the event. (The word “chairs” is the plural noun of “chair”. And this word can be count)
How many fruits are there on the table? (The word “fruits” is the plural noun of “fruit”. And this word can be count)
Countable noun = can be counted
Uncountable noun = cannot be counted
